"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."
I've got the best Gig
Job Role
Running a small company is a challenge. Definitely more than I thought it would be. This simple fact is what drives my most common activity here at Odin Development - Learning.
It's not that bad actually. I like to learn. I always have, and I suppose that is one reason why I gravitated to the computer/technology industry. Everyday there is something new to learn about. I'm just learning different type's things now.
I used to be the "Tech Guy" always knee-deep in implementing the latest technologies and exploring anything related to computers. Now I focus more on corporate strategy, profit and loss statements, and securing the best talent.
Five years ago those things sounded as interesting as watching static on TV. Times change and so have I. Actually, I really enjoy this stuff(1).
Am I the best at this? No.
Am I getting better? Everyday.
I have gone through an interesting metamorphosis. My prior tech-only ambitions have evolved to passions of providing first-class solutions to our clients and leading Odin to a solid position in the industry.
Corporate Life
I fit in around here because I'm surrounded by people who know how to step back and laugh. Odin has a great group of people who keep each other laughing through the day; both at ourselves as well as the world around us.
Secretly I keep hoping you will see how witty I am and think "wow, what a clever, funny guy he is." However, writing is hard and humorous writing is a mystery to me. Obviously. So, since you can't enjoy Odin's great corporate "culture," you will have to suffer through reading my failed attempts at humor(2).
Hobbies
I like to spend time with my wife and three kids. We do really fun things like watch each other use the computer. It's really isn't as pitiful as it sounds. It's worse. We have five people in my family and six computers at our home. The logic behind it says "it prevents fights and we have a 'spare' in case of emergency." The reality behind it screams "get a life." But we're happy.
Movies and Authors
If I was cultured and compassionate I would say I like movies like "Out of Africa," "The Piano," and "The Color Purple." Honestly though, they make that little punching bag at the back of my throat(3) fight for all its worth to keep my lunch down.
Instead my list of likes includes things like "Joe Dirt" and "Happy Gilmore." I'm so sophomoric. Don't forget movies like "Gladiator" and "The Terminator."
I'm also an avid reader(4) and enjoy the works of Robert Jordan and George R.R. Martin.
Footnotes
- Note to readers: Just like when I was the "Tech Guy", the word "Stuff" still carries a deeply profound, respected meaning in the community
- Note to self: Come back and re-edit this with something better so you don't sound so pathetic. Perhaps hire a humor coach.
- Note to reader: It's actually called the "uvula" for the dictionary-breaths among you, but it creeps me out to say that in public. I feel dirty.
- Note to reader: Avid Reader=Listening to audiobooks while I drive.
